Jul 24,  · "Emerald City" is my introduction to John Vanderslice. His off-center musical approach is refreshing and unusual. He's not blessed with a classic singing voice, but has a thin vocal quality that works much as Ray Davies' classic rock with the Kinks/5(10).
  4. Goltira says:
Emerald City buy CD music Description Vanderslice recorded this album in the midst of anguishing legal limbo after a visa application for his French girlfriend was rejected by US immigration. The album takes its title from a reference to the "Green Zone" in Iraq.

Emerald City finds John Vanderslice moving in a more organic direction, relying less on electronic studio trickery and more on the weight of lyrics in his songs, in the vein of the Decemberists or Neutral Milk cirnirencingsixsio.geithelisibhandsahabdichejohnrapa.coing to a press statement by Barsuk Records, Emerald City was supposedly written as John Vanderslice dealt with legal issues due to an incident .
  7. Kajisar says:
Weaving throughout the entire album is the ever present danger of opposition. But at its simplest, and captured with straight autobiography in album closer "Central Booking", Emerald City is made up of JV's love songs — confused and angry, afraid and defeated. Emerald City was tracked quickly, and mostly live at Tiny Telephone in San Francisco. The album was performed by David Broecker, Dave Douglas, Ian Bjornstad.

"Emerald City" is my introduction to John Vanderslice. His off-center musical approach is refreshing and unusual. "The Tower" plays like a soundtrack for a marching army with the drum pounding against the full vocal harmonies, "It's a burning tower hit by lightning & people are jumping out, It's coming down." Vanderslice's songs are /5(10).
