    Charles Mingus wrote ‘Goodbye Pork Pie Hat’ as an elegy for the pioneering jazz saxophonist Lester Young, who died in March , two months prior to the recording sessions for what would become Mingus Ah Um. A darkly elegant ballad with a lone dissonant note full of pathos and pain, it contrasts sharply with the exuberant gospel of ‘Better Git It In Your Soul’, the track which opens the album.

    Pork pie hats are often associated with Jazz, Blues and Ska musicians and fans. Charlie Mingus wrote an elegy for jazz saxophone great Lester Young called “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat” and the story said i wrote this tune during the night just after Lester’s death. Many artists have performed this tune, including Jeff Beck and Joni Mitchell.

I always loved playing this composition with Mingus, who in turn enjoyed sitting down at the piano and discussing his composition and orchestration style with me.
